Around the 1930's, there were heavy natural disasters that occurred. This age of the Dust
Bowl or Dry Thirties was where many people were constantly moving around and that made it harder to have a
stable job. They are leaving in
case of a windstorm or tornadoes. The economy went bad because many people were selling things for cheap to leave as soon as possible. A lot of farmers
in the south at this time came across many disasters. They would invest a lot of money for land, plants their crops around the year but faced droughts and dust storms.
As seen, none of the crops planted grew due to the drought and heavy dust storms.
The Great Depression led
to the foreclosure of homes and many did not have a roof over their head. When
banks would come to the farmers to collect rent, they would not have it and so
they forced them into foreclosure and had to sell their goods at an evacuation
sale. Many farmers lost their land and crops because of natural disasters. There
were no stocks because of the Dust Bowl and many workers in the cities were
affected by this. My findings relate to the picture because the meaning behind
these evacuation sales- farmers lost their property and were forced to move
away.
My research connects to The Grapes of Wrath because the book
goes into detail about the surroundings and weather: "the hooves of the
horses beat on the ground, and the dirt crust broke and the dust formed."(2) The Dust Bowl made many homeless and the farmers that
moved to the city had trouble getting used to the big city life. This relates
to the book because of the harsh circumstances that everyone had to deal with
including farmers. Those that witnessed the Dust Bowl had signs of silicosis
from breathing in so many dust particles with silica content. Dust pneumonia from
these dust storms killed hundreds. During the Dust Bowl, many from Oklahoma migrated to California and this only increased the unemployment rate.
